Background of the Study: End-of-life care is not only about medical management but also about ensuring that the patient’s dignity and comfort are maintained in their final days. This holistic approach to care involves respecting the wishes of the patient and their family, alleviating suffering, and ensuring that the patient feels cared for both physically and emotionally (Ogunlade et al., 2023). In Zamfara State, where healthcare resources can be scarce, nurses often play a crucial role in providing such comprehensive end-of-life care.
Nurses are responsible for providing comfort to terminally ill patients by managing pain, alleviating symptoms, and offering emotional and psychological support (Aliyu & Shehu, 2024). They also have an essential role in ensuring that the patient's dignity is preserved, which involves maintaining privacy, offering choices regarding care, and providing culturally sensitive care (Ogundele et al., 2025). However, there are challenges that nurses in Zamfara State face in ensuring dignity and comfort, such as insufficient resources, lack of specialized training in palliative care, and socio-cultural barriers.
This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in ensuring dignity and comfort in end-of-life care in Zamfara State healthcare facilities and identify the barriers and strategies for improving care in this setting.
Statement of the Problem: The growing need for quality end-of-life care in Zamfara State is not being fully met due to limited resources and gaps in nurse training. Despite the importance of maintaining dignity and comfort for patients in the final stages of life, there is little research on how nurses ensure these aspects of care in Zamfara State. This study will explore the role of nurses in addressing these needs and highlight the challenges and solutions for improving care.
